I've been away a long time...
I know, it's been an awful long time.

But I am here, and alive. Very much alive!

I will probably renew my efforts to keep this blog up to date, but just in an effort to ramp up to that glorious day when I'm updating fully, and in detail...

I thought I'd share with you the derivation of... Xmas!

So, many people think this is just an abbreviation for 'Christmas' -- in fact, commercially, it is just an abbreviation, for the sake of smaller banners, more punchy slogans, and from removing us slightly from the actual concept of Christ.

But not so... It comes from ... The Greeks! Christ is spelt 'Χριστος' in Greek, see? X being the Greek letter with the phonetic sound 'chi'. It's not even pronounced 'eks-mas'... or it shouldn't be, anyway.

Just as a side-note, 'Xtian' is also a valid form of the word 'Christian'...

Now religious types can self-label themselves as something COOL!

Merry Christmas,
-S

SEB!!! *glomp hug*

Um yeah, how are you doing?

So we should say it Chi-mas? Nice. Chi-tians just doesn't quite have the same ring though.

Hm, I think it more comes from that 'X' was often used as an abreviation for 'Christ' --

More info here: http://www.answers.com/xmas&r=67

I don't know enough about the Greek alphabet though... I should, but I don't :)

Latin I do though!

Dude, you know Latin, you're waaaaaaaay ahead of me. I will always get owned by languages, regardless of how hard I work at it. (Language is my intellectual Kriptonite.) Saying it with the Greek pronunciation of X would be kinda cool though...

Our Christmas Lunch (well, lunch, tea and dinner, as it did go on for about 3 hours, with 7 courses...) was truly epic.

It featured 3 desserts.

Those of us in the know saved some space for the sticky toffee pudding. Those few poor souls that didn't know... well... I think they're just starting to wake up now...

Mmmm, sounds like my kind of meal, and I always save room for sticky toffee pudding. The fools! If you didn't see it on my journal, our Christmas lunch (which was actually with friends as opposed to family) involved such extravagances as bowls of fresh berries, a platter of fresh prawns and a roast turducken. This was all finished with a number of cakes, baklava, strawberry crepes and pumpkin pie. Gotta love Melbourne in the summertime.

Ah, good ol' turducken. We had that once, but slightly modified - Gootucken. It was OK, but a little dry. I think we didn't season it properly...

However, baklava is an instant win!

Do Brits generally say "Eksmas" or do you consider that a mispronounciation? I'm not sure I've heard a Minnesotan say anything but Christmas, unless they were being fresh.

I knew that X = Christ, but I didn't know why until now. Makes sense though. Here we pronounce the Greek X as "Kai," for what it's worth. :)

We don't say 'eksmas' very often, but it is spoken occasionally!

I think many people infer 'Christ' from 'X', but normally it's the whole 'it looks like a cross' thing... at least that's what most people seem to say when I ask them where 'Xmas' comes from.

Kaimas!

Hm...

Most likely something affiliated to Essex.

I probably saw a cute blonde, with 'geek' in their name... and went for it.

No -- there was some connection between us, but hey... that was a few years ago now :)
