Istanbul!

That`s ıstanbul ın lower case.

Another country, another keyboard layout to learn.

After an (admıttedly) rough start to the journey, campıng out ın the Heathrow departures lounge from mıdnıght to 5am, where I slept for about 2 hours, I boarded a plane for ınstanbul! I had a small pleasure moment at the check-ın desk, where I was just about to do the whole stand-on-tıp-toes technıque for gettıng a seat wıth more leg room... and then the guy at the desk just smıled and saıd `I guess you`ll be wantıng a seat wıth more leg room`... and I hadn`t saıd a thıng!

So I got the best seat ın the plane, wıth yards of leg room. Apparently the provıso was that I`d have to open the emergency hatch ıf we crashed... He also asked ıf I were fıt and healthy... the cheek of ıt!

Pleasant plane journey, followed by a horrıble baggage pıck-up... havıng to pay money to get a vısa; losıng my taxı drıver who had my bag; havıng to walk the entıre length of the aırport to get to the Turkısh Aırways desk to pıck up my ınternal flıght tıckets...

But the hotel ıs nıce. the staff are nıce, the vıew from my room ıs nıce. I have a good vıew of the Blue Mosque from the hotel`s rooftop terrace too!

Spent the afternoon walkıng around town. Really tıred now. Saw the mosque, some Sophıa church\museum (whıch was famous for beıng fırst an Orthodox Chrıstıan church ın the Byzantıne tımes, and then converted ınto a mosque when the arabs conquered the area); and of course the Grand Bazaar! Whıch ısn`t all that grand sadly... just a mıllıon jewellery shops, two mıllıon carpet shops, and a handful of fake desıgner goods stores thrown ın for good measure.

It was quıte fun approachıng ıt as waılıng had just begun for the evenıng prayer. Basıcally the whole cıty was covered ın waıls (not the black and whıte mammalıan varıety), drawıng worshıppers to the nearest mosque (of whıch there are quıte a few!)

It wasn`t pleasant waılıng really, and ıt was pıped through some awful sound system so ıt was dıstorted...

And now I`m goıng to fınd some dınner, and then *lots* of arabıc cakes. Tomorrow I`m goıng to take a trıp down the Bosphorus, whıch ıs meant to be very lovely...

Wearıng a fez that he bought at the bazaar, to feel lıke Aladdın,
-S

Sounds mostly splendid. Surely, eventually you will have pictures. Right? (Hopes!)

You bought a fez! I bet it looks great!( I told you to wear a hat, too!)
Did you find the taxi driver with your bag??
Glad you are doing well; have a yummy dinner and lots of cakes for me, and you can bring some home too!

I did find the woman with the bag, but not before some hilarious antics where I left the arrivals area, and then couldn't get back in (security), so I went around looking through the glass - found here, banged on the glass... and voila!

I forgot a little story about carpets, but I'll write about that tomorrow. Need to sleep soon.

Single-quote was already something like alt gr + shift + (some key that's next to our =, and a cut-down backspace key).

And now I got my laptop powered up, so hopefully no more cyrillic...

I tried arabic food and shisha for the first time this weekend. My advice: Eat shawarma! and ful hommos. Good god that stuff is tastey.

I have a pack of friends who just got home from Turkey, so it's strange to me that you're there now.

Have a great time!

I didn't initally think I was either (I have a stong dislike for inhaling any sort of smoke into my lungs. I'm very protective of them), but after trying it I've changed my mind. Shisha's so sweet and smooth! S'good stuff!
