Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Bouncy, slightly over-full from falafel
Current music:The Killers (yup, overplayed, but so good...)

Turkiye, Turkey... and beyond!
As I hinted in a previous blog, my next destination is the sunny, massively-diverse nation of Turkey.

The fact that it's a secular, democractic Arab nation should make it interesting enough. I have to remember to not wear my skimpy shorts when I'm looking around religious monuments, but otherwise I should fit right in with my new funky hair (yes, photos coming, probably after my birthday party on Saturday), facial hair and sensuous, dark and mediterranean colouring.

This will be a slightly different trip from the last ones in that I won't actually know more than 1 or 2 people that live in the country. I'm hoping to stay with a friend in Antalya (down on the southern coast), but we shall see!

So far the itinerary is to fly into Istanbul, see the sights, eat the food, haggle with the hagglers in the Grand Bazaar -- then fly down to Antalya, which has the Temple of Zeus, Olimpos, various ancient Roman theaters...

From there, I'll fly up to Izmir, where I can get to Ephesus, Troy and some of the finest ruins left from Ancient Greece/Roman times.

Finally, I'll fly to Kayseri in the Cappadocia region. This is the bit I'm most excited about, as I'll be staying in a 'cave inn', which really is... an inn, carved out of the soft, volcanic rock. Take a look: http://www.esbelli.com.tr/. And with a true twist of modernity, there's wireless internet access in each of the rooms. God bless the Intarweb. But THEN! From there, I'll be taking a hot-air balloon ride over the 'moonscape' of Cappadocia. Apparently, this could well be the most beautiful place in the world for such flights. Seriously, just look at some photos: http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=cappadocia&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi. A 2 hour flight, from dawn..

Talking of dawn, I'll be catching the 7am flight from Heathrow, which is about an hour from here... So I need to leave my house at about 5am. Awesome.

And as some avid readers might've noticed from my mum's journal, it's my birthday tomorrow! I intend to celebrate it in the only way I know how - smut, more smut, yet more smut -- and chocolate. I guess I'll throw in some good films or something too, get some good company (for the smut)... and voilá! 23! Ancient. Embrace me, earth mother Gaia, for soon I shall be dead and laying with you.

There's also a vast party here on Saturday, involving nudity and oiled bosoms -- unfortunately both male, I'm sure. It's a triple whammy, for my dad, brother and I. Everyone I've talked to says they're going to my dad's party, which makes me wonder if I actually have any friends...

Anyway, I'll try to get you some photos of my oiled bosom.

You had falafel? I am jealous! Was it good?
Didn't they film Star Wars in Turkey?

I think that was Tunisia... for the desert shots, anyway.

But Tunisia is quite close... so maybe they did some shots in Turkey!

The falafel was OK... nothing spectacular!

I've picked quite a few photogenic locations, so I hope my camera and skills will be up to the task of capturing the views!

You're invited. If you leave now, you might just make it on time. We're only about 10 minutes from Gatwick, if you can fly into there...

Oh happy, happy birthday!

You've reached ancient. What's next? I wanna know, because I'm a little ahead of you.

Meanwhile, have all the glorious fun at Turkey, and keep yourself safe and sound. Will be watching out for your pictures.

(I love Turkish food - all the wraps, kebabs and whatnots.)

The one thing you can be sure of is that I will enjoy the food :) You forgot the cakes! Apparently the cakes in Turkey (Istanbul primarily) are the best in the world. So I'm excited!

What've I got to look forward in my 24th year?

Oh, heya, a slightly belated Happy Birthday! :)

If the food in Turkey is anything like the Turkish restaurants in Jordan or Jordanian gastronomy, which allegedly are related, then watch out for the sugar overdose from their cakes and sweets. As far as I recall Baklava and Lokum (Turkish delight), you'd best get yourself a spare set of dentures made, deadly stuff. :) ... and so worth it... *drool*
Oh, and when you ask them for bread to go with your meal, they WILL bring you bread: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v641/syacelion/Jordan%20-%20Easter%202005/DSC00085.jpg

As for what there is to look forward to in turning 24, I still haven't found out, but will let you know once I crack that mystery.

But say, btw, do you still happen to have my copy of A Hat Full of Sky, or did you pass that on to Jamie or someone, back then at Essex? Would make a nice pretext for me to finally invite myself to one of your (in)famous parties. :D

cheers from Liverpool

Heya, Chris!

You know, I was actually thinking about you last week. I stumbled across some guy online that had the name 'Sonnelion', and it made me think of you!

Thanks for the info.

I have *a* copy of A Hat Full of Sky. I may even have 2, I'll have to look in my cupboard!

The next party might not be for some time though... maybe a late-summer pool party or something.

Are you studying in Liverpool?

Studying? Not sure, let me check... Yeah, says on the paper I'm a student, so I guess I'm supposed to be studious.
*yawn* oldest joke ever...

M.A. in Science Fiction Studies at Liverpool Uni. Great course, actually.
But with one thing and another, I somehow managed to be oblivious of deadlines lying in ambush and now I'm currently so bogged down with my last two major essays that any excuse for a displacement activity will do -never underestimate the power of denial!! :)

As mentioned in the other post that may not have made it, I've got a friend currently living in Ankara that I could put you in touch with, she misses the UK and would surely enjoy showing you around town.

Science Fiction Studies...

And hear I was, thinking that my 'Computer Games Design' was an easy way out...

Is she cute?

And I must admit, that's one of the things I don't miss. No homework for 2 years now...

But I still have deadlines!

Well, who isn't, in their own ways? :)
She's alright.

My Gmail address is pretty straightforward, email me if you want me to put you guys in touch.
Back to work, let's see if I can get away with analysing WoW as a utopian text to reach the word count.

I demand that you email me first; I'm a hussy like that.

I managed to not play WoW until I actually got my degree...

And now I'm the raid and guild leader... I'm such a sucker for MMOs though :)
